My mom swims.

Every year since we got the cottage my mom and dad have come to visit us there for at least 2 weeks. It is the highlight of their year. My mom has lake water flowing through her veins and she would like to sit in the sunporch looking out over the water every single day of the year if she could. She also likes to swim. And when I say swim, I don't mean the moments-long splish splash the rest of us call swimming. We are on a small lake, but to swim across and back is a mile. And she swims that on an almost daily basis. We won't let her cross the lake alone now with all the boat traffic, so she goes along the shoreline. She wears a neon pink bathing cap we got her so that we can spot her anywhere she goes. The only reason she comes out of the water is because she gets cold. I think she could cross the English Channel no problem if someone would just heat the water please.
Anyway, her sisters like to make fun of her, mostly because they can't swim that far. Lol. On this gorgeous August day at a lake in Quebec she swam for an hour or more and when she got out, her sister had this shell "medal" all ready to present to her. It's just a fun, silly memory. But one that I would have forgotten if I did not have the photo to remind me.

Isn't this hobby just the best?

Quotable Quotes...

I love using quotations on a layout to say so much more eloquently or originally, what I actually mean. So I loved this challenge to use quotes on a layout, over at Southern Girls Challenge Blog!
The photo was taken at our family reunion last summer and shows my daughter having a chat with her aunty. It was a toss up this time, which quote to use, because the other feeling this photo evokes for me is reflected in this quote... "Relationships create the fabric of our lives. They are the fibers that weave all things together." Eden Froust.
I tried my newest favorite thing on this layout. Tulle. Big hole tulle. Sewed a square of it on the background for some really subtle texture.
Newest.
Favorite.
Thing.
Eiglassing Craft and Design are one of our sponsors this challenge and I used their paisley design. I printed the paisley papers and cut them out with the hexagon punch as well as used a strip along the side, and the flower strip is punched from one of their solid cs digis.
Thanks for stopping by to see what's new! Make sure to visit the Southern Girls blog too, to see the inspo there and get hooked up for a chance to win some fun creative swag for yourself!!

Something I've learned....

What's that saying about "too soon old, too late smart"?? Something like that?

When I was growing up, my grandmother lived with us for many years. She wasn't inclined to talk about the war years or even what came before that and I wasn't too concerned because it was boring anyway. Well, here's the too late smart. She's gone now of course and I'm a few (ok, many) years older and now that I have some frame of reference to life, I have many questions I'd love answers to. But now there are limited resources for those answers.

In 2003 I traveled with my mother, back to Latvia, the country of her birth. It's a small country on the Baltic sea, sandwiched between Lithuania and Estonia, that has seen more than it's share of turbulent history. Consistent occupation by any number of big tough bully countries and only as recently as 1991 have they enjoyed some independence.

All that to say, I was shocked by the feelings I had walking in places where my ancestors, whom I'd never met, had once walked and lived. I'm in no way a superstitious person, but I can not deny the frisson of something...not excitement exactly....more like recognition, that I felt on several different occasions of being exactly where my grandparents and great grandparents had once been. On their streets....at the grave site of my great grandfather....standing in front of the house in this layout. This is the house my mom's family lived in before she was born. I could never have imagined or envisioned this place, but in spite of that, it is undeniably a part of me.
I may not be able to ask my Grandma any of the questions I have now, but when I feel this connection to her past, it is enough.

You've seen this layout already, but this post also appears today on the All About Me Challenge Blog and I wanted to reprise the thoughts here as well.
Thanks for visiting!!

Catch up time...

We had a fun online crop on St Patty's day at Love is in the Details and I wanted to show you the samples for my challenges! If I were that woman who can do it all, this post would have gone up on the 17th and all y'all could've played along!! Next time ..... maybe.

This layout was done for a challenge to use all the colors of the rainbow and a little bit of glitter (pot o' gold y'know?) on a layout or project. The glittery bits I used are the pearls and bling.

And this one was for a challenge to incorporate 3 of any of the 8 listed inspiration suggestions:
An Irish proverb or blessing, something gold, a buckle and something hidden (like the pot o' gold y'know?) are the ones I used. I love this photo of my daughter. She left to go back north last week, but while she was here, she found this chair and reDID it. It used to be that lovely rose color so popular back in 1988. It was also popular with the cats who used to "use" it in the house where it lived. So after a good power washing, a couple weeks of Arizona sunshine bleach treatment, she spray painted it yellow. I had to get a photo of it and her before one of the neighbors hauled it away from the curb.

As well, recently, Lori at LiitD challenged us to do a layout on the topic of things we love about ourselves. 10 things!! I know right? We're women! Does ANY woman have 5 things she loves about herself?!?! Anyway, this is what I came up with, with a little help from Mr B.

Aiko inspiration and a very cool thing...

I got to work with the Aiko line from My Little Shoebox this month and here are a couple of my projects that were showcased on the MLS blog.

I love that this line can be used with such versatility, and so I made a tropical Hawaiian layout. Of my son when he was just a little kid and the thought of getting a photo taken with 4 beautiful girls was pretty amazing. Nevermind, he probably still thinks it's amazing....

Then I also used the Aiko line to decorate a plain white gift bag! Such a quick and easy thing to do when you're gift bag stash is low!! And how perfect is that ribbon that I'd been hanging onto in my stash since forever!?
Oh! And one more thing before you go!! A very cool thing!

Mixed tapes and '75 Mavericks...

It's all about the paper tapes over at Scrap Your Crap this month!! And with my collection and love for the stuff, this is a challenge that makes me very happy!! Have you fallen into that pit of happiness yet? If so, you'll want to join us over there, making a project that uses TAPE. Lots or a little.

Here's the layout I made. It's about the car that Mr B and his brothers drove to school back in the olden times. A 1975 Ford Maverick. Or Mav'rick if you've used all the "e's" in that alphabet. They also "customized" it. Spray painted the recessed license plate area matte black. Cuz they were that cool!
Be sure to check out the rest of the design teams' inspo and then link us up to your creation too!!

DIY embellies...

That's what we're up to at Challenge Me Happy this fortnight!
Here's my layout for the challenge, and the handmade bits are the red crocheted flower center (which I just learned how to do!!) and the red and blue star on a stick pin. The stick pin how-to is here.
I dug into the photo archives for this one again. Circa 1987. So, a scan of a film photo. Not great quality but I can live with it.
Nikki Sivils is our sponsor for March and there's a ton more design team inspiration on the CMH blog so make sure to check them out!! I hope you'll join our challenge and maybe win a prize!!

As well, there's a fun new color challenge up at Southern Girls Challenge blog so check that out too!!

Trend Watch....

One thing you can count on in the scrapbooking industry is that trends change as quickly as the seasons so it's always interesting to see what scrappers are loving at the moment. And I do mean moment, cuz that's as long as some trends seem to last, whether it's fashion, music or scrapbooking techniques and product!
Not that I'm complaining!!
I prefer my change to come in small, non-earth-shattering doses!!

With that in mind, I issued a challenge at Love is in the Details today. The challenge is to take from some of the current trends showcased on my layout and use the ones you like on a card or layout of your own.
I love banners. Admittedly, as trends go, that one is nearly a grandfather, but no matter, I still love them. So I used some. Cut them out of burlap and machine stitched them down.
And then there's hexagons. Love them to heck. And I just found some old discontinued hex punches on ebay from Creative Memories. I guess they were hot long time ago and have come 'round again!

You may have noticed too, there's a lot of splotchy mist spray being done. Kinda like that look too!

So there you go. What trends do you love and what do you absolutely refuse to put on your layouts, lol?!

6 Ventpils iela

This is the address where my mother and her family lived for a while in the 1930's. In Latvia, a small Baltic country that has been under occupation by Russia or Germany at various times throughout much of it's history, although it regained it's independence in 1991.

I chose to scrap this photo for a challenge to share something of our heritage, at All About Me challenge blog. (I love how the wood grain paper (October Afternoon - Sasparilla) picks up the wood fence in the photo.)
The leaf is cut with the Cricut, from woodgrain shelf paper. I know, how fabulous is that, right??
We'd love to have you join us with a layout about YOUR family heritage...your descendants will be glad you did, and so will we!! When you do, link up to the post at All About Me and we'll stop by to leave you some love!!

Show us a Secret!

We've a fresh challenge up at Southern Girls challenge blog and we want you to show us your hidden journaling, photos, pockets or whatever. I used a cute little brown paper bag (that I've had in my stash for, seriously, years!) I wrote my journaling, a list of some of the things (just a few of the many, many things!) we love about our son, on shipping tags and also, yes, on a clothing tag, and then tucked them into the bag. Because the photo is so large, I could adhere the bag right on top of it without losing anything of the photo itself.
It would be so cool if you'd join us, first by checking out the other amazing projects from the design team at the blog, and then by getting inspired to make a card or layout of your own that includes something hidden! When you do, link it up back at the Southern Girls blog and you might find yourself winning something fun from one of our sponsors this month - Delicious Doodles and The Paper Shelter!
